Background Checks For School Volunteers?
In light of the recent issues surrouding a few mid-state teachers’ alleged abuse of students, some schools are requiring background checks to be completed on the people who volunteer in the schools. The Tennessean has the article. Does anyone know of Cheatham County looking at doing this?
One of the issues the Tennessean brings up in the article is the fact that this would quickly become an expensive process. In addition, would this reduce the number of volunteers available if folks had to submit to such a background check?
And aren’t background checks mostly limited to this state, as well as a few federal databases? So, what if a person just moved to TN? Wouldn’t that mean that unless a person committed a federal crime, we wouldn’t really know if a person was a felon from [for example] TX?
Lots of food for thought with this article.
